Jair Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities concluded he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under house arrest.

The former head of state was found guilty of plotting a military coup in September and sentenced more than a 27-year term in prison, but he remained under home detention pending court reviews.

High Court Judge the presiding justice said the decision to arrest the 70-year-old politician was a precautionary step after fresh information came to light.

This involved trying to remove his ankle monitor and a summons to a demonstration that could enable a chance to flee".

Judicial Records Show Escape Risks

In a document approving the custody, Justice Moraes said data from the centre monitoring Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the one-time head of state's "intention to break the electronic ankle bracelet to guarantee victory in his flight.

This, it said, would be assisted by the confusion caused by the demonstration called by his son.

His son, Flávio, who holds office as a legislator, called for a meeting of his followers near his father's house to take place on Saturday night.

The senator wrote on social media on Friday: "Are you going to fight for your country, or watch it all from your smartphone there on your settee? I urge you to battle with us."

Details of Guilty Verdict

The former president was convicted of orchestrating a plot aimed at keeping him in power after he was defeated in the national vote to his political opponent, Lula.

High Court judges said that he knew of a scheme which encompassed plans to murder his opponent and his vice-presidential running mate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to detain and kill Alexandre de Moraes - the top judicial official who has been overseeing his judicial proceedings.

The plot was prevented because it couldn't obtain the endorsement of the military leaders. His successor was took office without issue on 1 January 2023.

But a week later, on January 8th, many Bolsonaro supporters attacked and damaged official structures in the national capital, Brazil's capital.

The law enforcement took action and around approximately 1,500 persons were detained.

The judges found that the rioters had been incited by the former president whose plan, they said, was for the Brazilian military to take action, restore order and return him to office.

At the time, his attorneys called the 27 years and three months sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also banned from running for public office until twenty-sixty - eight years later after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The one-time head of state called the trial a political persecution and said it was aimed at blocking him participating in the next presidential race.
